A Very Happy Camper Indeed

today's post comes to you live from our hotel lobby in santa fe. i get that it's weird to write from the lobby, especially when i am surrounded by other hotel guests enjoying their morning breakfast. but the wireless doesn't seem to want to work in our room and i feel and i haven't updated you in a while...so here it goes...it will be short and sweet.

our past few days have been the best of the best (i was going to say the best of the trip but the beginning of this trip seems so long ago that i can't really recall what that was like, and the internet connection is too slow to for me to go back and read what i had thought before). we settled in silverton colorado, a small mining town (small as in one paved road, and the road was only paved four years ago!) that still has an old main st with original wooden fronts to the buildings. ABN found a great inn (he only recently discovered tripadvisor) that was right out of the 1800s with beautiful lace and old fixtures. we drank durango beer at the silverton brewery (where we (I) were also able to catch part of the sox game) and walked around the little shops that dot the street. we woke up early (way early) in the am, and jumped on a bus to durango...where we then took an old fashioned, open air train ride through the mountains back up to silverton. it was gorgeous, waterfalls after ever turn, the river rushing by us. as we swerved in and out of the mountains, hikers and locals stopped to wave at the train. such a great day.

that night we headed into new mexico, stopping at the heron lake state park. THIS is my kind of camping. it was quiet, not overwhelming, not cold, not wet...and absolutely beautiful. ABN was thrilled and we drank the happy camper wine he had bought after my notsohappy camping experience. i once again glowed at the fact that i married a man who can build a fire as we enjoyed our s'mores (and i finished my trashy book - i've now moved on to something ABN brought with him, but will never read, about the scarlet macaw...i'm not sure...). we took a nature walk (even though it was a flat and clearly defined by pebbles, and marked with numbers that corresponded to a brochure that pointed out trees and berries...let's call it a hike, okay?) and watched the sun set over the beautiful lake (which was MUCH bigger than spy pond for those who are interested). ABN was once again very proud of himself for creating a happy camper situation and when i woke up the next morning immediately asked if this meant i would be up for camping again when we got to sedona - i urged him not to push his luck.

we had a short drive to santa fe - which so far has been full of spicy food and strong margaritas - not a bad combination if you ask me. we had so many places that we HAD to eat that we were forced to miss the 4th of july pancake breakfast on the town plaza but alas, huevos rancheros from tecolote were calling our names. today we are off to a wine festival and a little more shopping (we haven't actually bought anything yet) on the plaza. and of course, many more meals from ROAD FOOD.

tomorrow we head out early for sedona and slide rock - staying in another camping cabin (and yes, they are really as cute as you have all inquired) and from the pictures that ABN found online...it looks good to me. until palm springs....
